The idea of forming this organization, started from the end of the year 2003, as an initiative stimulated by a group of concerned individuals.
The main reason to establish such a welfare organization is; to empower them by provide knowledge and skills through various training on projects of their choices and interest for income generating which will enable them to help themselves.
This initiative was shared with few friends and colleagues, who happened to concur with this idea.
Consequently, they organized themselves and started with planning meeting rotations in their houses as venues.
They met twice every week after working hours, and drew up a plan of action.
The aim of this organization is to empower, render assistance and provide support to widows, widowers and orphans of HIV/AIDS, and other vulnerable groups in our society.
1. A strategic plan, to determine the activities that the organization will embark upon, on a longer term basis were also drafted.
2. A logo for the organization and the letterhead were designed and approved.
3. Brochures with detailed information on the organization were also designed, printed and distributed to different supporters, donors and other organizations for information.
4. Special T-shirts and caps were designed and used during the launching of the organization only.
5. Desks and wall calendars were also designed, developed, printed and distributed.
6. Information on orphans and other vulnerable people and parents was compiled and shared during international meetings which were designed specifically for the Organization of African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS in Africa (OAFLA) which took place in Banjul, the Gambia 2006; for the African First Ladies Campaign “Treat every Child as your Own campaign” against mistreating of orphans and other vulnerable children in Africa.

Vision:
To promote the empowerment of widows/widowers and orphans caused by HIV and AIDS; to improve their living standards by facilitating access to better nutrition, to instil self-confidence through own contributions to the organization; and to improve access to basis services such as health and education for their wellbeing.
OEWONA is to be the voice on behalf of beneficiaries and endeavour to keep plight at the forefront of public consciousness. The organization is dedicated to serve, support, encourage, empower and uplift the beneficiaries.
Aims and Objectives:
1. To promote the empowerment of Widows/Widowers and Orphans (herein referred to as ‘the beneficiaries’) due to HIV /AIDS and TB as one of the main opportunistic infections
2. To improve their living standards by facilitating access to better nutrition and acquisition of skills
3. To instil self-confidence through own contributions to society; and to improve access to basic services such as health for their well-being so that the beneficiaries are entitled to full, healthy and productive lives
4. To initiate and lobby for support to address the needs and to ensure the rights of beneficiaries
5. To initiate programmes targeting HIV/AIDS/TB clients, by providing community-based care and support services
6. To liaise and network with organizations with similar objectives in order to co-ordinate, co-operate, support and to learn from each other
7. To empower and uplift the target group through skills training and by organising beneficiaries into self-help groups, motivating them to become self-reliant and to experience personal growth
8. To be a reliable channel of donor funds for beneficiaries
9. To be a service provider and to forge partnerships with similar organizations, either national or international, working with HIV/AIDS.
